Who Can Visit?

The Salvation Army Red Shield in Tampa is a homeless shelter that provides free meals and support services to people experiencing homelessness. It is not open to the general public as a walk-in food pantry. Food is provided to shelter residents as part of their stay.

The shelter serves both men and women. Veterans receive special accommodations. Families are generally not accepted at this location.

How Often You Can Visit?

Residents can stay for up to six months if they remain in good standing with the program.

Good to Know

You'll need to call ahead to check on bed availability before showing up. The shelter has a 9pm curfew. It holds up to 153 beds and can fill up quickly.

Food & Essentials

Shelter residents receive free meals daily. Breakfast and dinner are provided. Lunch is not offered. Menus can vary depending on what food is donated.

Free on-site laundry is also available to residents.

How to Pick Up

Meals are served at set times in the dining hall. Residents do not need to go elsewhere to access food.

Additional Support

Each resident is assigned a case manager who meets with them regularly. Case managers can help with:

  • Applying for SNAP benefits
  • Finding housing, including housing vouchers
  • Connecting to outside resources
  • Building a plan to get back on your feet

Veterans can access the HUD-VASH program for housing support. General population residents may qualify for Section 8 housing through the Up and Out program.

Facilities

The shelter has separate floors for women and men. Veterans may receive private or semi-private rooms. A dedicated outdoor smoking area with benches and picnic tables is available. Free laundry is on-site.
