Newton Food Pantry
Who Can Visit?
The Newton Food Pantry serves Newton residents and students attending Newton-based colleges and universities. No appointment is needed during walk-in hours on Wednesdays from 3pm to 7pm. Simply show up, wait at the entrance, and you'll be let in based on order of arrival.
If you'd like a scheduled time, appointments are available on Wednesdays from 12pm to 3pm and on Thursdays from 10am to 1pm. To get on the appointment list or change an existing one, visit the Contact page or call 617-796-1233.
How Often You Can Visit?
All clients are welcome to shop twice per month.
Good to Know
Bring your own grocery bags. Park on Homer Street or Commonwealth Avenue. After you're done shopping, you can pull your car up to the War Memorial Circle for loading, and volunteers will help carry your bags to the car. The pantry is accessible by MBTA Bus #59.
If Newton Public Schools close for bad weather, the Newton Food Pantry closes too. Check the pantry's website or local media before heading out.
Food & Essentials
The pantry carries a large variety of fresh produce, dairy products, proteins, grains, and shelf-stable foods, including culturally relevant items. Personal care products are also available, such as feminine hygiene products, baby diapers, toothpaste, and toilet paper. Households with children under 18 also receive Kids' Bags packed with healthy snacks and easy-to-make meal items.
How to Pick Up
Newton Food Pantry is a client-choice pantry. You walk through the shopping space and pick out the items you need, rather than receiving a pre-packed bag. Walk-in clients wait to enter and shop in the order they arrive.
Additional Support
The pantry delivers groceries to clients who are medically homebound. It also operates the Newton Community freedge, a 24/7 publicly accessible refrigerator and dry pantry at 420 Watertown Street in Nonantum, where anyone can take food at any time.
Ways to Give
Newton Food Pantry runs entirely on donations. You can make a financial donation online, or send a check payable to "Newton Food Pantry" to 1000 Commonwealth Avenue, Newton, MA 02459. Recurring monthly giving, stock gifts, and estate gifts are all welcomed. For questions about estate or other giving options, call 617-796-1233 or email jeff@newtonfoodpantry.org.
Non-perishable food and personal care items that are unopened and not expired can be dropped off at Newton City Hall in the bins near the pantry entrance on the Homer Street side. Drop-off hours are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays from 8am to 6pm, and Thursdays from 2pm to 6pm. You can also shop the Amazon Wish List and have items shipped directly to the pantry. To host a food drive, contact the pantry.
How to Join the Team?
Volunteers must be at least 15 years old and commit to at least one shift per month for six months. A brief background check is part of the process. To apply, go to the contact form and select "Volunteer Opportunities." Shift options include pantry setup, client distribution, bag preparation, home deliveries, freedge restocking, Kids' Bags packing, and food drive sorting.
