Who Can Visit?
Heartland Hands serves residents of Southaven and Horn Lake, MS. Eligibility is based on the federal income scale and is determined through an interview process when you arrive. The pantry serves a wide range of people, including families, senior citizens, children, the working poor, people experiencing homelessness, individuals with disabilities, disaster victims, and those who are newly unemployed. All services are free.
Items Needed for Registration
Bring these documents when you come in for the first time:
- A photo ID
- Proof of all household income (your most recent check stub)
- Proof of residency (a current utility bill)
- If you receive food stamps, bring your SNAP letter
How Often You Can Visit?
Each qualifying client can receive food one time per month.
Good to Know
New applications and re-evaluations must be seen before 12:30 PM. If DeSoto County schools are closed due to bad weather, Heartland Hands is also closed that day.
Food & Essentials
The pantry distributes grocery baskets filled with essential food items. The pantry is stocked with canned goods, staple goods, and many other grocery items. In addition to food, they also provide non-food items such as wipes, cleaning supplies, and hygiene items like diapers (adult and baby), bar soap, personal hygiene products, dishwashing liquid, toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, and laundry detergent.
How to Pick Up
When you visit, you'll go through an interview process that checks your needs and helps connect you with job agencies and other community organizations. Food is handed out by volunteers to those who qualify. Come during open hours on Tuesday or Thursday from 10 AM to 1 PM.
Additional Support
Heartland Hands can connect clients with job agencies and other community organizations to support greater stability and self-sufficiency. They also offer delivery for those who can't come in. To arrange a delivery, call Mike at (901) 488-2635 or the office at (662) 280-5365.
Ways to Give
Heartland Hands accepts monetary donations and physical items. You can donate money through PayPal at the PayPal fundraiser page. You can also support them by linking your Kroger account to Heartland Hands through the Community Rewards program at Kroger.com. The pantry especially needs diapers (adult and baby), bar soap, personal hygiene items, dishwashing liquid, toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, and laundry detergent. How to Join the Team?
Heartland Hands is run entirely by volunteers. Volunteer roles include helping stock and distribute food, general office duties, interviewing clients for eligibility, helping with publications like brochures and newsletters, and acting as a community relations liaison.
