Who Can Visit?

Bishop Sullivan Center's food pantry at 6435 Truman Road serves households in zip codes 64120 through 64129. You can call 816-231-0984 with any questions. Documentation is required to receive groceries. If you are a first-time visitor or need to renew your pantry card, bring all the items listed in the "Items Needed for Registration" section below.

Items Needed for Registration

If you don't have a pantry card yet, or need to renew yours, bring the following when you come for the first time:

  • Your photo ID
  • Proof of address from the last 30 days, such as a utility bill
  • Social Security cards or birth certificates for everyone in your household for whom you would like food

On return visits, bring your food pantry card and your photo ID.

How Often You Can Visit?

A household can receive supplemental groceries once every 30 days.

Good to Know

Visitors consistently say they receive a generous amount of food. One reviewer shared that a family of five gets enough to feed five people for a month. Another noted being in and out in about 60 minutes. One reviewer said the process is simple and they were usually done in less than 15 minutes.

Food & Essentials

The pantry provides supplemental groceries that cover all five food groups, giving enough food to plan complete meals. Items can include milk, protein, produce gleaned from wholesalers and grocery stores, dessert items, and other staples. Reviewers have mentioned receiving items like a whole turkey and sweets. Through the "Rick's Kids" shelves inside the pantry, diapers, formula, wipes, and baby food are also available for low-income parents with infants.

How to Pick Up

Volunteers serve clients, build orders, sort donations, and glean produce at the pantry. Volunteers pick up produce, bread, protein, and other donations from wholesalers and grocery stores to keep the shelves, fridges, and freezers stocked for visitors.

Additional Support

Bishop Sullivan Center offers several extra services beyond the food pantry:

  • Employment Services: Free job counseling, resume editing, interview advice, computer classes, job lead assistance, and one-on-one job counseling to help you find and keep a job. Call to reserve a spot at an Employment Services orientation.
  • Household Assistance: Help if your household is on the edge of eviction or facing a utility shut-off due to an unexpected expense like a health problem, job loss, or car repair. Each client fills out an application and, if qualified, meets with a counselor. Checks are written directly to the utility company or landlord. Please visit their website to submit an application for assistance.
  • Access KC (formerly KC Medicine Cabinet): Short-term medical help with prescriptions, vision care, durable medical equipment, diabetic supplies, and dental emergencies. Bishop Sullivan Center is a partner of Access KC.
  • Project ElderCool: Free air conditioner installation for seniors and people with respiratory disabilities during summer months (generally June through August).
  • Christmas Assistance: Help for families to provide gifts and winter necessities for their children during the holiday season. Families can be "adopted" for Christmas, or receive Christmas Gift Bags filled with gifts. Registration opens in October.

If you don't find the service you are looking for, call United Way at 2-1-1 (or visit 211.org) for a referral to another organization.

The clothes closet may be visited once every three months. Bring your food pantry card and photo ID, or the full set of registration documents if you do not yet have a pantry card.

Ways to Give

Donations of food, clothes, and household items go directly to clients. Financial contributions can be made at bishopsullivan.org/donations/make-your-gift and can be directed to support food, jobs, or aid programs. You can also sponsor a bag of groceries through the "Our Bag, Our Community" food drive, or sponsor a night at One City Café to provide meals for everyone. To donate items or ask about the most-needed items, visit the accepted items list online or contact the center at 816-231-0984.
