Joseph's Place is a small food pantry for people who live in the Cathedral neighborhood of Rochester and are facing food insecurity. An appointment is required before you visit.
Who Can Visit?
Foodlink doesn't give out food to the public at its Mt. Read Boulevard location. However, they operate mobile pantries throughout the area. Use Foodlink's Find Food map to find distribution sites near you. You can also call 2-1-1 (or text 898-211) to learn about other social-service resources in the area. If you'd like to donate food, you're welcome to drop off your contributions at their Mt. Read Boulevard building.
Good to Know
Because the food Foodlink shares comes mostly from donations, quality can vary. Some people have found items that were past their date or starting to spoil, so it helps to read the labels and look things over when you get home. Many others are thankful for what they have received, especially the fresh produce, like vegetables and apples.
Food & Essentials
Foodlink gathers millions of pounds of donated and purchased food each year and works to share healthy, nutritious items with the community. Fresh produce makes up about a quarter of what it distributes, and the food bank supports dozens of local farms so it can bring in more fruits and vegetables. People who have received food through Foodlink describe getting fresh vegetables and apples, cheese, and proteins like pork, fish, and hot dogs.
Additional Support
Beyond supplying its member pantries, Foodlink runs several programs that help people get healthy food and other support:
- Pop-Up Pantries bring emergency food relief, mainly to rural parts of the 10-county area that have limited access to traditional pantries. Community partners host these distribution events on a monthly or bimonthly basis, and they focus on healthy, perishable food. You can find upcoming sites on the Find Food map.
- Curbside Market is Foodlink's mobile market that brings fresh, affordable food to neighborhoods, with stops at places like affordable housing sites, senior centers, health clinics, and community centers. The trucks carry fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and select grocery items, and they accept cash, debit, credit, SNAP, Fresh Connect checks, and WIC. It runs six days a week, year-round. You can see where it stops on the Curbside Market page or in the printable schedule.
- SNAP help: Foodlink is an approved Nutrition Outreach & Education Program (NOEP) provider and can help you find out if you qualify for SNAP, apply, submit documents, and keep your benefits. Reach out at (585) 413-5091 or SNAP@foodlinkny.org.
- Healthy meals: The Foodlink Community Kitchen prepares thousands of healthy meals each day for students in the City of Rochester.
- Nutrition education: Foodlink offers workshops and classes that celebrate the impact food has on our health, our families, and our communities.
Ways to Give
You can support Foodlink with food, money, or time. To give money, donate online through the donate page, call (585) 328-3380, or mail a check payable to Foodlink to PO Box 60766, Rochester, NY 14606.
To give food, large donors like manufacturers, retailers, and farms can contact Food Donation Services at donations@foodlinkny.org or (585) 413-5078. Schools, groups, and companies can host a food drive to collect non-perishable goods. Individuals can drop off small donations at the main lobby at 2011 Mt. Read Blvd., open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., though Foodlink notes these gifts often make a bigger impact at a local member pantry.
How to Join the Team?
Foodlink relies on thousands of volunteers to sort and inspect donated food, help in the Community Kitchen, assist Curbside Market customers, and care for the Community Farm. Everyone must register for a shift ahead of time, since no walk-ins are allowed. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old, and anyone under 16 needs an adult with them. Most shifts are about three hours and include standing and lifting up to 25 to 50 pounds, so closed-toe shoes are required.
New volunteers can explore the options and sign up on the volunteer page, and returning volunteers can use the volunteer calendar. If you have questions, contact the Volunteer Programs & Events Coordinator at thomasle@foodlinkny.org or (585) 413-4085.
