Who Can Visit?
Project SOUP is open to Somerville residents who need food assistance. Whether your SNAP benefits were reduced or you're facing food insecurity, you're welcome here. New visitors register on their first visit during open pantry hours, so no advance sign-up is needed.
Items Needed for Registration
On your first visit, be ready to share basic information for everyone in your household.
Good to Know
Project SOUP serves roughly 900 families every month and has been recognized as a 2026 Healthy Pantry by The Greater Boston Food Bank for its commitment to providing nutritious food and a welcoming, client-centered experience. Visitors describe the pantry as well-stocked with fresh items. If you have questions before your first visit, call (617) 776-7687 or email gminter@shcinc.org.
Food & Essentials
The pantry offers free groceries including fresh produce, canned goods, and protein items like meat and poultry. Staples such as dried beans, cereal, canned tuna, tomato paste, cooking oil, and instant coffee and tea are often available. Personal care items are also distributed, including toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, hand soap, dish soap, and toilet paper. Baby supplies like formula, diapers, and wipes are carried as well, along with adult diapers.
Additional Support
A Monday Night Community Meal is served every Monday from 4:30 to 5:30 PM at Somerville Community Baptist Church, 31 College Avenue, Somerville. This free full meal is open to everyone, though it isn't held on Monday holidays like Memorial Day and Labor Day. Project SOUP also runs a home delivery program for individuals who are homebound and can't come in person.
Ways to Give
Monetary gifts go the furthest, letting the pantry buy food in bulk at discounted prices. You can donate online. The pantry also keeps Amazon Wishlists updated regularly with its most-needed items. Physical donations of food or household goods can be dropped off at Project SOUP during open hours, as long as they're unopened and unexpired. Current top needs include canned tuna, dried beans, cereal, tomato paste, cooking oil, toothpaste, shampoo, body wash, deodorant, baby formula, and baby diapers. To organize a food drive, call (617) 776-7687.
How to Join the Team?
Project SOUP always needs volunteers to help unpack food deliveries, stock shelves, and pack grocery bags. To sign up, register online, email jtenryk@shcinc.org, or call (617) 776-7687. You can also download the volunteering opportunities flyer for more details.
