Who Can Visit?

The Salvation Army of Greater Rochester's Emergency and Family Services (EFS) program at 100 West Avenue serves anyone in Monroe County who needs emergency help. The Salvation Army helps people of all religions, backgrounds, and sexual orientations without discrimination.

Items Needed for Registration

All adults need to bring a photo ID or 3 official documents that show their name. Children who need items or assistance also need to have ID.

How Often You Can Visit?

You can come once a month to receive food assistance.

Good to Know

No appointment is needed. Applications are taken on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving early is a good idea.

Food & Essentials

Visitors receive a food bag and a personal hygiene bag. Diaper assistance is also available. Those who are waiting for public assistance such as DSS may qualify for food, bus, and clothing vouchers until their benefits begin.

How to Pick Up

Walk in during open hours. No appointment is needed. Pre-packed food bags and hygiene bags are given out to visitors on a first-come, first-served basis.

Additional Support

EFS social workers offer crisis assessment and case management to help families and individuals find stability. Other services include:

  • Prescription assistance
  • Bus passes (when available)
  • Clothing assistance
  • Stranded traveler assistance
  • Advocacy and referrals to other agencies
  • Bilingual services
  • Registration for Salvation Army programs such as Project Bundle Up, Long Point Camp, and Christmas Assistance

The Salvation Army also runs a street outreach program that uses "the Canteen," an emergency disaster vehicle, to bring food, clothing, toiletries, and support to people who can't come in person. A community Thanksgiving dinner is held at all three Rochester locations each holiday season.
