Who Can Visit?

The Salvation Army of Greater Rochester helps households in crisis throughout Monroe County through its Emergency and Family Services program. If you're struggling to make ends meet, you can come here for food and other emergency help. People who are waiting on other forms of assistance, such as DSS, may also qualify for food, bus, and clothing vouchers until their public assistance begins. Applications are taken on a first come, first served basis, so there's no need to sign up ahead of time.

Items Needed for Registration

All adult visitors should come prepared with a picture ID or 3 official documents that have their name on them. ID is also needed for any children who need essential items or assistance.

How Often You Can Visit?

You can receive food once a month.

Good to Know

Help is given on a first come, first served basis, so it's a good idea to arrive early. Bilingual services are available if you need them. One visitor shared that the staff "always comes through" and are friendly, and another called it "a big help with food."

Food & Essentials

The pantry provides food bags to those in need, along with personal hygiene bags. Diaper assistance is also available for families with little ones. If you're waiting on other assistance, you may receive vouchers to area supermarkets to buy food and personal items. One neighbor said simply, "I love the food they gave us."

How to Pick Up

Stop by the location at 70 Liberty Pole Way during open hours to apply for help. Visitors are served on a first come, first served basis, and food is given out in bags. You can call 585-987-9500 if you have questions before you come.

Additional Support

Beyond food, the Emergency and Family Services program offers a range of extra help, including prescription assistance, bus passes when available, stranded traveler assistance, clothing assistance, and crisis case management from social workers. Staff can also connect you with advocacy and referrals to outside agencies, and help you register for other Salvation Army programs like Project Bundle Up, Long Point Camp, and Christmas Assistance.

The Salvation Army also runs a street outreach program from the Liberty Pole Way center. Using its emergency vehicle known as "the Canteen," staff and volunteers bring food, clothing, toiletries, and spiritual support to people who can't come in to ask for help. At the start of the holiday season, the staff and volunteers also hold a community Thanksgiving dinner at this location for anyone looking for a warm meal and the company of neighbors.
