Who Can Visit?

The JFCS Squirrel Hill Food Pantry is open to anyone in the greater Pittsburgh community who needs food. People who live in zip code 15217, keep kosher, are Chatham University students, or have a qualifying medical dietary restriction can schedule a shopping visit to choose their own groceries. Everyone else receives thoughtfully pre-packed bags. To schedule an appointment or learn more, call 412.421.2708.

How Often You Can Visit?

Each household can visit once per month, whether it's a one-time need or ongoing support.

Good to Know

Every household leaves with a balanced mix of shelf-stable food, fresh eggs and produce, and frozen meat or vegetarian protein. Halal options are available on request. The kosher section is stocked with guidance from the Va'ad HaRabanim of Pittsburgh.

Food & Essentials

The pantry provides shelf-stable pantry staples, fresh eggs and produce, and frozen meat or vegetarian protein. Kosher, halal, and gluten-free options are available for those who need them.

How to Pick Up

Visitors who live in the 15217 zip code, keep kosher, are Chatham University students, or have a qualifying medical dietary restriction can schedule a self-select shopping visit to browse and pick their own groceries. Pantry staff guide shoppers through the process and weigh groceries before they leave. All other visitors receive pre-packed bags put together by the pantry team.

Additional Support

A social worker is on hand to help visitors connect with resources beyond food. This includes help applying for SNAP benefits, finding housing or utility assistance, and arranging transportation. For critical needs support, leave a voicemail at 412-742-4215 or email critical@jfcspgh.org and a social worker will follow up.

If you can't make it to the pantry in person, home delivery is available within the 15217 zip code for people who are elderly, disabled, or otherwise homebound. Call 412.421.2708 to arrange.

JFCS also connects clients with JFunds, a collaborative program offering financial assistance through six partner organizations in the Pittsburgh Jewish community.

Ways to Give

You can make an online donation and designate it to the JFCS Squirrel Hill Food Pantry at the donation page. In-kind donations are also welcome, including non-perishable food, whole fresh produce, diapers, health and personal hygiene items, can openers, pet food, and new reusable plastic food storage containers. To schedule a drop-off or learn more, call 412-421-2708 or email pantry@jfcspgh.org. You can also reach out to jgold@jfcspgh.org to organize a food or hygiene drive.

How to Join the Team?

The pantry counts on volunteers for shopping shifts, stocking, and bag building on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis, with shifts lasting about two to three hours. Groups are also welcome for one-time volunteering to unload trucks, organize food, and create emergency bags. Individual shift slots are currently full, but you can contact jgold@jfcspgh.org to get on the list or learn about other ways to help. You can also explore all volunteer opportunities at the volunteer page.
