Community Crossroads
Who Can Visit?
Community Crossroads is open to neighbors in the community. To take part in either the grocery or sack lunch program, you'll need to complete a household application for food one time per year.
Items Needed for Registration
To join the diaper and formula program, bring a birth certificate the first time you participate for each child who is 3 years old or younger.
How Often You Can Visit?
For food, you can choose one of two options each month. You may receive groceries once per week, or sack lunches on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. For clothing, neighbors may shop once per month. Cleaning supplies from the WellCare Closet are available one time per month per household.
Good to Know
Distribution is first come, first served until capacity is reached, so plan to arrive early. You can use the Texas Area Food Bank's locator at tafb.org/find-food to find other nearby pantries if you want more food options during the month. Volunteers from the Listening Post are also available during every First HAND distribution to listen and pray with anyone who'd like to talk.
Food & Essentials
The First HAND Food ministry offers two choices: groceries or sack lunches. Grocery distributions include meat and vegetables, as well as other shelf-stable pantry items. Sack lunches are handed out in the dining hall. The pantry also distributes dog and cat food through a partnership with Don't Forget to Feed Me, one bag per household monthly, available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays while groceries are being served. The WellCare Cleaning Supply Closet provides household cleaning supplies on Thursdays.
Through the Formula and Diapers (FAD) ministry, diapers and wipes are provided for children under 3, and formula for children under age 1. Adult diapers and feminine hygiene products are also distributed as available.
The Clothed in Love clothing ministry offers free clothing, with coats, blankets, shoes, and backpacks also available seasonally in limited quantities.
How to Pick Up
The grocery program is a choice pantry where you pick up your own items. Grocery distribution runs Monday mornings, Wednesday middays, and Thursday middays, all first come, first served. There's also a Third Thursday Bonus Pantry at 6:30 p.m. Sack lunches are distributed in the dining hall (enter through the front door facing Hemphill Street) from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
A hot breakfast is served Monday mornings at 9 a.m., first come, first served.
Additional Support
On Wednesday evenings, WOW! (Worship on Wednesdays) offers worship from 5:30 to 6 p.m., followed by a free hot dinner at 6 p.m. and community activities for all ages from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. at the Community Crossroads building (1516 Hemphill Street). For questions about WOW!, contact coordinator Leah Wyckoff at 817.335.1231.
The Salt and Light Dental Clinic operates out of the same building, though it is temporarily closed for construction. For updates, visit saltandlightdentistry.org.
Volunteers at the Listening Post are available during any First HAND distribution time and are there to listen, offer encouragement, and pray with neighbors who want to share a concern or a joy.
Reviewers also mention help with temporary IDs and referrals to local resources.
Facilities
Reviewers mention that laundry assistance and haircuts are available at the Crossroads building on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
Ways to Give
Donations of powdered formula and diapers of all sizes are always welcome and needed to keep the FAD ministry going. You can also give online to First Presbyterian Church at fpcfw.org/give/online-giving. Clothing donations are accepted for the Clothed in Love ministry. Reviewers note that donations are easy to drop off with a quick walk-through.
How to Join the Team?
To volunteer at Community Crossroads, register online at bttr.im/88fhg. Create a username and password, accept the policies and volunteer waiver, and submit your application. Once approved, you'll get a confirmation email and can choose volunteer shifts through the portal or the MyImpact app. You can also email crossroads@fpcfw.org with questions.
All volunteers must complete Civil Rights Training annually. Volunteers who handle or serve food must also complete Food Handler training, which costs $10 and is good for two years. You can get that cost reimbursed by submitting your receipt and certificate to MaLinda Morehead at Community Crossroads.
